This week on Divorce and Beyond, as we celebrate America's Independence, Susan has created a week-long series of mini-episodes where she will be busting the Top 5 Divorce Myths for you so that you can celebrate your freedom from their misleading and harmful assumptions!
Myth #1: Divorce means WAR! One of the most pervasive myths about divorce is that it means a long, acrimonious and horrible process where the spouses, and their children, are constantly caught in a cycle of conflict. In fact, it is this myth that often prompts people at the beginning of their divorce to hire the meanest attorney they can find and to do things like hide money and service papers immediately. But is this true? Does divorce mean war?
Tune in to today's first bonus mini-episode and find out - this episode can change your divorce for the better from day one!

This week on Divorce & Beyond, Professor Stephanie Tang joins Susan Guthrie Esq. to explain what “in the best interests of the children” really means and why it’s not as simple as you think!
One of the topics listeners have been reaching out about the most lately is “the best interests of the children” standard in family court. Professor Tang joins Susan to share the various factors that go into determining children's best interests and describes the impact of a judge’s discretion. What seems like such a simple topic is truly the most complicated in family court custody hearings.
Stephanie L. Tang is an Assistant Professor of Law at Baylor Law School, teaching Family Law. Before joining Baylor, Professor Tang was a Partner at a family law firm in Chicago, where she specialized in all areas of family law.
Topics and Golden Nuggets include:
- Where the “best interests of the child” standard originated
- Family court considerations of factors related to custody hearings
- What judges look at when it comes to a child’s professed wishes
- Stephanie answers, “Can a parent request a change to custodial orders over time if they don’t agree with the best interests of children determination?”
- Does the bearing of what a parent wants come into play?

In today's replay episode of Divorce & Beyond, Kate Anthony, our friend from The Divorce Survival Guide and a top divorce coach, will reveal how to have the most difficult talk of your life - telling your spouse you want a divorce. Tune in to gain invaluable guidance and strategies from this #2 of all-time episode.
*******************************************************************
The decision to divorce is hard, and can take a long time, but the next step, telling your spouse, is one of the most critical steps in the process and it is imperative to do it right! Kate Anthony, Susan Guthrie's guru on all things communication, joins her for this episode to help you plan that conversation so that you start things off the best way possible. Trust us, this is truly one of the most important conversations that you will ever have and it pays to put time and effort into doing it the best way possible so that you can, as Kate says in the episode, put your head on the pillow that night knowing you did your best.
They say that you should start as you mean to go and that is never more true than when starting a divorce. How you tell your spouse, will set the stage for how your divorce will unfold and in many ways, how you will continue into your BEYOND so take the time and do it right!

About this week's special guest: Beverly Price
Beverly Price brings the best of both divorce and empowerment coaching to women. She holds an MBA and certifications in Divorce, Empowerment, Life and Transformational Coaching with 25+ year’s women’s divorce coaching experience and 15+ years as a corporate executive. She provides knowledge, support, and insight to women contemplating divorce, living through a separation in the midst of the legal and financial process and wanting a new and exciting life after divorce. She helps them to prepare for and walk through their emotional and logistical challenges with more knowledge, support, and more self-esteem and with less pain that she did with her divorce.
Research shows that 79% of women aren't confident, 4 out of 5 think they're less than other women, 62% don't believe they’re intelligent, and 1 in 2 don't think they're pretty. Divorced women struggle even more. Divorce and toxic marriages can cause a woman’s self-esteem to plummet. Price provides one-on-one coaching to help women through the ups and downs of the legal and financial process and emotions of divorce, helps them develop the skills necessary to fully participate in their divorce and find their voice and identity as a strong and emerging fulfilled woman.

This week on Divorce & Beyond, Susan Guthrie, Esq. welcomes the Founder of Divorced Girl Smiling, Jackie Pilossoph, to talk about how to cope when your ex moves on in a hot minute.
In this episode, Susan and Jackie discuss what happens (and how to cope) when your ex moves on immediately following the divorce. It could be a shock or devastating, even if you were the one who initiated the divorce.
Jackie Pilossoph is the creator and editor-in-chief of Divorced Girl Smiling, celebrating its 10th anniversary, which comprises a website, podcast, mobile app, and a list of divorce professionals you can trust! A former broadcast news journalist and features reporter for the Chicago Tribune, Pilossoph was also the author of Love Essentially, her weekly column in the Chicago Tribune.
Topics and Golden Nuggets include:
- You’re still allowed to grieve, even if you wanted the divorce
- Everyone deals with and grieves divorce differently
- There are various reasons why an ex may move on quickly
- You don’t give yourself a chance to heal or own your part of things by putting a bandaid over it with a new relationship
- The work you do following divorce helps you to determine what you do or don’t want in a relationship
- When your ex immediately moves in with the person they were having an affair with
- What do you need to be happy? Focus on you.
