This week, America’s Favorite Parenting Expert, Christina McGhee, returns to Divorce & Beyond with host Susan Guthrie. Christina shares her insights on how to make back-to-school work for your kids, even amid a divorce!
We are starting a new school year, and challenges for parents, co-parents, and kids come with it. The start of a new school year is stressful and exciting, and if you add family restructuring due to divorce - it can be extremely overwhelming. In this episode, Christina McGhee shares ways to support your kids and encourage openness and connection during back-to-school.
Christina McGhee, MSW, is an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker, and author. While splitting up is undeniably hard, Christina believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families. She feels with the right kind of information and support, parents can be a child's absolute best resource when families change.
Topics and Golden Nuggets include:
- Co-parenting and how to approach the beginning of the new school year
- How you can use the start of the school year as a connection point
- It may be helpful to give teachers or schools a heads-up about navigating co-parenting transitions, etc. Equally important is to talk to your kids about the changes ahead of time and how that might impact their school experience
- Creating a co-parenting code of conduct: Create a plan about how you and your co-parent are going to conduct yourselves when in the presence of your children

About this week's special guest: Christina McGhee
Christina McGhee, MSW is an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker, and author. While splitting up is undeniably hard, Christina believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families. She feels with the right kind of information and support, parents have the ability to be a child's absolute best resource when families change.
Throughout her career, she has educated both parents and professionals on how to minimize the impact of divorce on children. In her book, PARENTING APART: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids, Christina offers parents useful strategies for dealing with the “real-life” everyday challenges of coparenting.
One of her core beliefs is that divorce doesn’t make you a bad parent, it makes you a parent going through a bad time. Because she is passionate about helping parents get through that bad time, Christina also maintains an active coaching practice that allows her to work with Moms and Dads all over the world.
Most recently, Christina launched an online program, Coparenting with Purpose. Designed to provide moms and dads with an easy, convenient way to access critical information, it’s filled with practical tools and solutions for managing the most common coparenting problems.
Additionally, she has contributed to several other media projects as a featured expert, a content consultant, and a writer/producer. Currently, she serves as a consulting producer and subject matter expert for the documentaries SPLIT: A film for kids and their parents and Split UP: The Teen Years, two compelling films that let kids know they’re not alone and normalize the many feelings and experiences children and teens encounter when parents part.
Over the years, she has been featured on television, radio, podcasts, and in print around the US and abroad. A few places you may have seen her are TODAY Parents, the BBC, The Times, and Parents Magazine.
Married for over twenty-seven years, Christina and her husband live outside of Houston, Texas. As a mom of four (two bonus and two bio) children, she has acquired extensive on-the-job training as a chauffeur, negotiator, short-order cook, scheduler extraordinaire, and finder of all things lost. About this week's special guest: Nicole Romito
Nicole Romito, CFP, CDFA, is a Partner and Lead Advisor with Private Vista. While she has clients who are in all different cycles of life, she gets an extra boost collaborating with women who are going through a transition and are making life-altering financial decisions. This could be due to divorce, becoming a widow, selling their business, or being able to retire from their corporate executive career.
What excites Nicole about what she gets to do each day? Helping women make smart and thoughtful decisions as they navigate an emotionally stressful time. Clients see her as a teacher, advocate, and partner. Having gone through a divorce herself and leaving a 10-year career with a bank to start my own financial planning practice, Nicole understands the stress of being 100% responsible for your financial security. That is why she invests extra time with her clients and their other professionals such as their attorney and CPA to create a plan which takes them from a place of fear and uncertainty to one of clarity and confidence.
Whether it is a proposed divorce settlement, settling an estate or navigating deferred compensation plans and exercising employer stock plans on your way to retirement; her clients are relieved, that together, we create a forward-looking financial plan so they can see what the future may mean for them and their family. Since I walked by their side and never judged, during a very emotional time during which is it common to become flooded and unable to make decisions, they look to me as their ongoing partner to successfully manage their wealth.

This week, Susan Guthrie welcomes podcaster and child of divorce Grace Casper to the Divorce & Beyond podcast. Grace shares insights on what your kids wish you knew about how your divorce impacts them.
The scariest part of divorce for parents is how it may negatively impact their kids. In this episode, Grace Casper joins Susan to offer her unique perspective (as a child of divorce) about what kids need, want, think, and feel about divorce and how it affects them. During this conversation and in Grace’s new book, Dear Parents: Notes From a Child of Divorce, Grace shares how you can help your kids through a divorce and have open and ongoing conversations with them.
Grace Casper’s world changed forever when her parents told her that they were getting a divorce. In the wake of this, Grace started writings tips for her younger brother based on what she was learning from her parents’ divorce, trying to help him as they went from house to house. Fourteen years later, Grace began the first draft of the book that would be borne from these tips, writing in the hopes of being able to provide parents with a look into the effects of divorce on their children with first-hand experience. She also runs a page called Divorce Tips From Kids and a podcast called "Divorce: What I Wish My Parents Knew." This podcast allows other children of divorce to share their stories.
Topics and Golden Nuggets include:
- Creating a catalyst for conversations with children about divorce - conversations about divorce are not a one-and-done conversation
- How to empower your kids (and keep them at the center) - a good place to start is to trial co-parenting schedules and ask them for input
- Golden Nugget! Grace’s “suggestion box” approach to parenting during divorce
- Teaching your kids to find the good
- Find a safe person to share your thoughts and feelings with about divorce that is NOT your children
- It is a gift to your child and yourself to be able to be the safe parent

Today on Divorce & Beyond, Susan Guthrie is joined by guest Karen Covy as she shares what you need to know and do to make good decisions. This is especially important during divorce, so listen in!
Divorce is a time when you are going to make important life decisions in a short period. If you don’t know how or don’t do it well, you will kick yourself in the aftermath. When discussing divorce, we don’t typically talk about making sound, reasoned decisions and, more specifically, how to make them. In this episode, Karen takes us through a scientific approach to decision-making. She helps you become the CEO of divorce and learn how to make those big decisions and do it well. You never want to look back and think, I wish I had thought that through more clearly - so be sure to listen and learn!
Karen Covy is a Divorce and Decision Coach, Lawyer, Mediator, Speaker, and Author. She coaches busy professionals and business owners who want to make clear, confident decisions during highly-charged emotional situations. Karen also helps her clients become the CEOs of their divorce so that they can navigate their divorce with less conflict, less expense, and less damage to themselves and their children.
Topics and Golden Nuggets include:
- What the science of decision-making tells us about deciding to divorce - Hint: it’s all emotional.
- How to make a big, emotional decision when there’s a lot at stake, and you don’t want to screw up
- “A big part of the decision-making process is figuring out what you want and then believing you have the ability to create that thing.”
- Where to start when deciding whether you should stay or go
- Why it’s important to reality-test your options
- “If you don’t take action on a decision, it’s not really a decision.”
