Whether it's your first holiday after a separation or you've been navigating this season for years, Christina's practical and actionable advice is a gift that keeps on giving. She covers everything from how to communicate with your co-parent about the holidays to managing gifts and family expectations and ensuring your children feel the joy of the season.

About this week's special guest: Christina McGhee
Christina McGhee, MSW is an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker, and author. While splitting up is undeniably hard, Christina believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families. She feels with the right kind of information and support, parents have the ability to be a child's absolute best resource when families change.
Throughout her career, she has educated both parents and professionals on how to minimize the impact of divorce on children. In her book, PARENTING APART: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids, Christina offers parents useful strategies for dealing with the “real-life” everyday challenges of coparenting.
One of her core beliefs is that divorce doesn’t make you a bad parent, it makes you a parent going through a bad time. Because she is passionate about helping parents get through that bad time, Christina also maintains an active coaching practice that allows her to work with Moms and Dads all over the world.
Most recently, Christina launched an online program, Coparenting with Purpose. Designed to provide moms and dads with an easy, convenient way to access critical information, it’s filled with practical tools and solutions for managing the most common coparenting problems. Over the years, she has been featured on television, radio, podcasts, and in print around the US and abroad. A few places you may have seen her are TODAY Parents, the BBC, The Times, and Parents Magazine.
Married for over twenty-seven years, Christina and her husband live outside of Houston, Texas. As a mom of four (two bonus and two bio) children, she has acquired extensive on-the-job training as a chauffeur, negotiator, short-order cook, scheduler extraordinaire, and finder of all things lost. Amy Polacko, Divorce and Empowerment Coach and Investigative Journalist returns to The Divorce & Beyond podcast with Susan Guthrie. Amy is here to help bust the top five myths of domestic abuse. The myths being busted are prominent and often repeated time and again. We must raise awareness so we don’t perpetuate these myths and continue to cause incredible harm.
Amy Polacko is committed to helping women live on their terms during/after a toxic relationship or divorce. As a divorced single mom, she is passionate about coaching women one-on-one and founded the empowerment group Strong Savvy Women to support, inspire, and guide single women. She is also an award-winning journalist highlighting women's issues, including divorce, domestic abuse, coercive control, and singlehood.
Myth Busting and Golden Nuggets includ
- Myth #1: “The Hysterical Woman.” Labeling women as "hysterical" diminishes their experiences and allows the cycle of abuse to continue.
- Myth #2: “Why didn’t she just leave?” One reason: You need to have a safe exit plan, which takes time and planning.
- Myth #3: If there isn’t physical violence, it’s not really abuse. The more we tell stories of domestic abuse, the more aware we can become.
- Myth #4: “It only happens in poor families.” Domestic abuse doesn't discriminate and affects people across all socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Myth #5: “What happens in someone’s home is a private matter.” Domestic abuse isn't a private issue; it has societal repercussions.
- What you can do to help break the cycle of abuse and raise awareness.

Her recent journalistic work has appeared in The Washington Post, Newsweek, NBC News THINK, and Ms. Magazine. After graduating from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Amy worked as a newspaper reporter for Newsday and was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team covering the TWA Flight 800 crash. She then transitioned to television journalism, working as a writer and producer in New York City. This week, Susan Guthrie welcomes Divorce Professional Donna LaScala to Divorce & Beyond! Donna shares real-life stories of financial abuse and trickery to help you break free from the cycle.
You've probably heard the saying, "Knowledge is power." Well, let's talk about another reality: money equals control. In divorce, it's not uncommon to witness one partner using money to control another. With her impressive 30 years of experience in the financial services field, Donna LaScala shares some valuable insights in this episode. She'll guide you on handling your finances during a divorce, spotting signs of financial abuse, and finding a path forward if you are in this difficult situation.
Donna E. LaScala, CDFA, RFC, CLTC, is the President of Comprehensive Divorce Solutions LLC. and has been in the financial services profession for over 30 years. Holding professional designations of RFC (Registered Financial Consultant) with IARFC Ethics Approved Status, CDFA (Certified Divorce Financial Analyst), and CLTC (Certified in Long-Term Care), Donna is dedicated to providing a personalized approach to meet each client’s needs and individual goals.
Topics and Golden Nuggets include:
- Financial abuse isn’t always overt, and it can take many different forms
- There may be reasonable explanations for some financial decisions - but if anything raises a red flag - look into it. Don’t ignore it.
- It’s not always about the actual money but a way to manipulate and control
- To move forward and get to the post-divorce life, you need a financial professional by your side

The Divorce Coalition comprises all your favorite podcasters, bloggers, influencers, and more. We joined together to raise awareness and provide information and resources to fight the epidemic of domestic abuse in our world.
Founded by Beverly Price of Her Empowered Divorce, Kate Anthony of the Divorce Survival Guide, and Susan Guthrie of Divorce & Beyond. We have gathered together our friends and colleagues to amplify our voices to reach as many people as possible.
Visit the coalition webpage at www.divorcecoalition.com to find resources, including the many podcast episodes and blog articles that are on the topic from all our members, as well as many other ways to help donate and find assistance. Together, we can make a difference, and we can let domestic violence survivors know that they are not alone.
