Laura Friedman Williams is a native New Yorker whose writing credits consist of countless PTA newsletters and program notes for talent shows and school auctions, as well as ghostwritten bar mitzvah speeches for many of her friends. Her wit and wisdom have not yet made it to a larger audience, but her years spent raising children and running events at her children’s schools have kept her writing steady and sharp. She credits her degree in English from Washington University and the ten formative years she spent in book publishing – first in Subsidiary Rights at Warner Books (now Grand Central Publishing) and then at Henry Holt & Company, then as a book scout and finally as a literary agent – for giving her a deep love and respect for the written word. This week on Divorce & Beyond, Host, Susan Guthrie speaks with documentary filmmaker, Ginger Gentile, a child of a high conflict divorce herself, about the truly heart-breaking cases of parental alienation and estrangement that cause a parent to lose contact with their child and even more heartbreaking, for a child to lose a loving parent. Alienation is a form of child abuse wherein on parent manipulates a child in order to damage that child's feelings for their other parent and can cause irreperable harm to that child. However, it remains an intractible problem for alienated parents to repair and that courts are ill-equipped to deal with. Ginger's latest film, Erasing Family, is a look within the dynamics of alienation through the eyes of the children involved and their parents, step-parents and siblings. Notably, there is hope there too as some of the children have re-established relationships with their alienated parent after years of separation.

Attorney and Mediator, Terri Breer, has been a licensed attorney since 1985 and has experience as a civil litigator, mediator and collaborative attorney handling divorce, family law, real estate, and business matters. Although she has conducted civil trials involving business, real estate and family law disputes, her practice has been devoted to mediation of family law disputes and other forms of alternative dispute resolution including collaborative divorce methods. She has written several articles on alternative dispute resolution and the need for change in the current family law adversarial system. She was Chair of OCBA – Alternative Dispute Resolution Section in 2014. She has served as Board Member of the Southern California Mediation Association (SCMA) for two terms from 2015 to 2021. SILVIA FOTI, author of the memoir The Nazi’s Granddaughter: How I Discovered My Grandfather Was a War Criminal, is an award-winning investigative journalist in Chicago and a high school literature teacher. She holds master’s degrees in journalism, education, and creative nonfiction. Silvia made a deathbed promise to her mother to write a book about her famous, WWII hero grandfather, Jonas Noreika, twenty-one years ago. Silvia’s grandmother begged her not to write about her husband. “Just let history lie,” she whispered. Silvia had no idea that in keeping her promise to her mother, her discoveries would bring her to a personal crisis, challenge her Catholic faith, unearth Holocaust denial, and expose an official cover-up by the Lithuanian government. Her goal in writing this story of her grandfather, known as General Storm in Lithuania, is to upend Lithuania’s narrative that Lithuanians had nothing to do with killing Jews, that it was all done by German Nazis.

April is officially recognized as Month of the Military Child. There are more than 1.6 million military children who face many challenges and unique experiences as a result of their parents' service. We often remember to honor those who serve, and rightly so, but the family members, especially the spouses of our active military members also make sacrifices in the name of our country and deserve our thanks as well. In honor of Military Family Appreciation Month, Kristina Kaiser, herself the former wife for almost 30 years of a Marine officer, gives an insider view into the many ways that our military families give of themselves, often to their detriment, while a family member is in active service. Facing many moves and relocations, job limitations, unpaid volunteer work expectancies, co-parenting alone and more, the spouses and children of military personnel also can be affected by the military life. Beyond that, divorce can be extra complicated when an active or former member of the military is involved. The pensions, benefits and more that are one of the highlights of military careers are limited in some ways in being divided during the divorce process and the non-military spouse may end up receiving less than the might have if they were not dealing with military benefits. Whether you are a member of the military, a military family member or one of those who owe them our thanks, this episode is a wonderful reminder of all they sacrifice for their country and why those thanks are deserved!

Stephanie Raffelock is the author of Creatrix Rising, Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women. (She Writes Press in August, 2021). She also penned the award winning, bestseller, A Delightful Little Book on Aging.
A graduate of Naropa University’s program in Writing and Poetics, Stephanie was a contributor to The Rogue Valley Messenger, in Oregon. She’s blogged for Nexus Magazine, Omaha Lifestyles, Care2.com as well as SixtyandMe.com.
A former i-Heart Radio host, she is now a popular guest on podcasts, where she inspires women to embrace the strength and passion of their personal story.
