In this episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with podcast host, coach and author, Karen Millon, about the universal human experience of trauma, both large and small, and the need to heal so we can live our best lives.
"Trauma is one of the biggest equalizers" says Karen Millon, this week's guest on the podcast. Everyone, no matter how blessed they are, suffers from traumas in life. There are small "t" traumas and Large "T" traumas, but they all add up and they all require healing in order for us to lead happy and healthy lives. It probably comes as no surprise that divorce qualifies as a Large "T" trauma and couple that with the other traumas encountered in any well-lived life, it becomes imperative to find help to heal. That's where Karen steps in as an expert in the variety of healing modalities available to us. As a Healing Coach she can help you on your healing journey and where additional expert help is needed, Karen can help match you with the right modality and provider.
In this episode Karen walks you through:
- How much of our trauma starts in childhood, no matter how "perfect" that childhood was.
- The reality of trauma responses and how they manifest in our lives.
- What the first key step is in healing.
- Different healing therapies such as EMDR, somatic experiencing and more.
- Why you have to go back to a trauma to break free from it.
- How her journey to healing, and that of her first husband, helped them to have "An Amazing Divorce" which led to her new book.
It truly is never to early to start healing so tune in to this episode today and start your journey!

More Information About This Week's Special Guest:
Karen Millon is a Colombian-born and Canadian-raised entrepreneur and personal development advocate. Ms. Millon holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario. And while business is her professional venue, her passion is healing and wellness. Healing was the cornerstone of her Amazing Divorce, a book that she wrote and is coming out in the fall of 2020 so when Millon realized that the subject of healing in general wasn’t garnering as much national discussion as other, more niche forms of trauma and recovery, she funneled her business skills into a high-level media platform devoted to the subject of recovering from any and all forms of trauma. Her brand and her business operate as a liaison between healing and trauma experts and the uninitiated. Millon’s HEALIN podcast features weekly dialogues with professional therapists, nutritionists and other well-being professionals. Visit www.healin.net for more information on Karen Millon's Healin.

In this very special episode, Susan Guthrie visits again with Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, "The Divorce Doctor," to discuss many ways that mental health issues can negatively affect our relationships and how that plays out in divorce.
For the past several months the tabloid covers at the grocery checkout have been filled with headlines predicting the imminent divorce of "Kimye" a/k/a Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West. These headlines follow on the heels of numerous stories and articles highlighting the many ups and downs of relationship that has seemed to be challenged in the face of Kanye West's struggles with bi-polar disorder. His many highs and lows have played out in the public eye and have highlighted the often swept under rug challenges couples face when one, or both, are dealing with mental health issues. Our favorite psychologist, Dr. Elizabeth Cohen returns with a compassionate but pragmatic discussion of the difficulties that people face when they or a loved one are challenged by mental health issues.
In this episode Dr. Elizabeth shares:
- How additional stressors, such as divorce or relationship issues, can impact mental health.
- Why treatment is not a sign of weakness.
- What she means by "we need to honor hope."
- Why falling in love makes us so vulnerable.
- How to deal with a partner who may be suicidal.
AND SO MUCH MORE!
Statistics say that marriages where one of the partners is struggling with mental health issues are 2x more likely to end in divorce and when the mental health issue is a bi-polar dianosis, the couple is 95% more likely to divorce. This is an issue that will affect you or someone you love and it's time to shine a light on these mental health challenges so listen to this episode today!
Dr. Elizabeth will be joining Susan again for more episodes soon so here is your opportunity to ask her anything! Send an email to divorceandbeyondpod@gmail.com and take advantage of your opportunity to ASK "THE DIVORCE DOCTOR" ANYTHING!

Whether you are divorcing a narcissist or are embroiled in any difficult relationship, a hallmark of a high conflict case is the flood of hostile calls, emails and texts that are repeatedly sent by one or both of the parties. This barrage often flows over into social media and into conversations with others. The constant cycle of conflict is crazy-making and seemingly impossible to control but that was until Bill Eddy and his BIFF method arrived! With the release of the third book in the BIFF series, "BIFF for Co-Parent Comunication," Bill Eddy helps you to regain a sense of control and peace that will benefit both your life and that of your children. The BIFF method will help you to craft responses to the hostile communications from your ex that will defuse the conflict and remove you from the cycle. Simply put, being Brief, Informative, Friendly and Firm (BIFF) is your key to freedom and there is simply no better guide out of the darkness of a high conflict relationship than Bill Eddy!
In this episode Bill shares:
- The simple logic of being brief, informative, friendly and firm and why it works.
- How YOU decide what kind of response you will receive from your ex.
- Why you need to absolutely avoid the 3 A's.
- A simple substitute for saying "I'm sorry . . ."
- Why Bill says you should get Miranda Rights before you go on social media.
AND SO MUCH MORE!
This episode is absolute GOLD for anyone experiencing difficulty in communicating with a volatile ex so listen today and start taking your life back one BIFF at a time!

In this episode Susan Guthrie speaks with podcast host and author, Jessica Frew about living boldy as we go into a new year and a new future.
The journey through divorce or any significant life transition can be overwhelming and exhausting. Jessica Frew, one of the hosts (with her husband and ex-husband) of the hit podcast, "Husband-in-Law" knows this from personal experience. After the divorce however, it can be hard to find your way. The future is such an unknown that is seems scary and dark but Jessica advocates living BOLDLY into that future and has created her BOLDology program to help you launch!
In this episode you will learn:
- What "the pause" is and what it can do for you.
- What living boldly really means.
- How you identify your values so that the future is exciting not scary.
- Why bold boundaries are key to living boldly.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, going bold in 2021 will take your life to the next level!

In this episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Daniel Herrold, one of the co-creators of Divored Over 40, a place to find friends and community after divorce.
Often, when the smoke clears after divorce, it becomes apparent that there is another casualty of the split: the friends have fled. There are a number of reasons why this can happen. Sometimes they are uncomfortable around a breakup, other times they don't want to take sides so they take no side at all, an in others, they do take a side and it's your exes'! So what is an adult supposed to do to make friends? Enter Daniel Herrold, who with two new friends, has started a movement! Just a few months ago they created an online blog on Instagram called @divorcedover40 that grew to include local get-togethers and now already has ambassadors in over 22 cities around the country to spread the word and help you find your tribe!
It can be so hard to start again after divorce and many people just jump into dating to fill the void but Divorced Over 40 is here to help you find something even more important: support, friendship and community. Take a listen and join the movement!
