So often when parents sit down to figure out the parenting plan they pull out a calendar and start carving up the time with the kids as if it were another commodity like the bank accounts and debts. In fact, although the amount of time that children spend with each parent needs to be "equitable" it doesn't need to be 50/50. In fact, 50/50 rarely actually does (or should) exist. Find out what the most important considerations actually are for parents who are setting up a time-sharing plan with their children and what will make it successful for the kids.

In this episode Susan Guthrie speaks with Wendy Dolin, the Founder of MISSD, about the potentially fatal drug reaction known as akathisia and how speaking to Wendy recently saved Susan when she had her own near miss. This is truly information that may save your life or the life of someone you love and Wendy's journey beyond the heartbreak of losing her beloved husband and how she took that journey to turn it into a mission to create akithisia awareness around the globe!
That day ten years ago started much as any other and Wendy Dolin had no idea that when her husband Stewart went off to work that day he would never return home again. The tragedy that befell her husband and family that day took Wendy on a journey through the world of drug trials, ground-breaking litigation and world-wide advocacy to found MISSD (The Medication-Induced Suicide Prevention and Education Foundation in Memory of Stewart Dolin), dedicated to creating awareness around akathisia and helping us to be educated consumers of prescription and over the counter drugs.
What is akathisia? Akathisia is a disorder induced as a side effect of medications (including, but not limited to, SSRI's and antipsychotics), which can cause a person such intense inner restlessness that the sufferer is driven to violence and/or suicide. There are many permutations of akathisia but the number one thing to take away from this episode? Anytime you start, stop or change the dosage of a medication, BE AWARE! This is when you are most vulnerable for akathisia or other negative effects of medication. MISSD is not anti-medication but is pro-information so be sure to listen and be informed today!

September is Suicide Prevention Month and we find ourselves in a world where our mental health is challenged in new and different ways. Dr. Elizabeth Cohen a/k/a The Divorce Doctor, is here to help us understand why cases are on the rise, what we need to look for and what we can do to help other or ourselves if we are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression or any other mental health challenge.
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, people going through divorce have a 30-40% increased likelihood of experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Layer on top of that the fact that the number of divorces is reported to be up approximately 34% during COVID and that the current world we live in with COVID is resulting in up to a 3-fold increase in diagnoses of anxiety and depression according to a survey by John's Hopkins. It is vitally important that we prioritize our mental health and that of others at this extremely vulnerable time and Dr. Elizabeth shares what to look for, what you can do and lets you know YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Michelle attended American University as a Journalism major, graduated Hofstra University’s Communications program with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, and then earned a Double Masters Degree in Education from Adelphi University.
Originally from New York, Michelle grew up fascinated by the hustle and bustle of New York City. She was aching to “make it” as something, anything, ever since 9th grade.
“I remember walking into my first day of high school, and one of my teachers announcing “Whoa, this one is powerful – we’re going to have to watch out for her,” Michelle recalls. That sentence has always stuck with her and has motivated her to always keep moving, harder and faster, toward her dreams.
Michelle moved to Miami in her late 20’s where the “second part of her life” began. She married her daughter’s father and they brought beautiful Bella into the world. In this episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Beth Behrendt, a divorced mother to three boys who has successfully followed a nesting custody arrangment with her ex for six years about how the arrangement has helped to make her restructured family stronger than ever!
When parents are facing separation and/or divorce, they often assume that establishing two separate households that their children will move between is a pre-ordained conclusion. But what if that isn't the case? What if your children's lives could continue almost without change, and the parents could be the ones to make the move? That is "birdnesting" and for guest, Beth Behrendt and her family, the arrangment has been the key to their success as a new type of family following the divorce six years ago! Amazingly, Beth's three boys have never left their family home as Beth and her ex have moved in and out of the home to parent them. Along the way, Beth has discovered that there are several upsides beyond the lack of disruption to her children's lives that come from the nesting arrangment that make it even more appealing. She shares all of these upsides, and some of the downsides to be aware of, in this eye-opening episode!
